I’ve been using Fluid XP+ Nano-Fluid Alien Green UV liquid coolant in a custom liquid cooling system for a while now and I’m quite happy from its performance, especially being one of the most expensive and claimed to be top performing liquid coolant at the moment. This special liquid uses nano-technology to stop ions from attaching themselves to the coolant, creating a molecular barrier around the coolant. Unlike other coolants which contain harmful substances like ethylene glycol, which have salts that corrode and become conductive, Nano-Fluid is all Eco based with non-ionic corrosive inhibitors, which contain no salts and no corrosive properties and this is one of the most important advantages that made me choose that coolant…

However after a few weeks of use I’ve noticed that the liquid flow inside the water cooling system has been reduced significantly and there seems to be no any apparent problem to cause that as everything seemed to work just fine. After disassembling the water cooling block on the CPU which is the most restrictive part of the water cooling system I was surprised to see the above thing showing how the liquid coolant has actually blocked the thin channels of the water block. The most likely culprit to cause that is the green coloring being used, however I did not expect so acclaimed cooling liquid to have such a serious drawback. If I’m right and the problem is with the green “paint” then probably the best choice would be to go to the clear Fluid XP+ Nano-Fluid as there should be no coloring solution of any kind added, so be careful if you are considering to use that solution!

Asus G51J 3D is actually the first gaming laptop that is intended for stereoscopic 3D gaming using the 3D Vision active shutter glasses, although you can still play in 2D mode at 120Hz without any problems if you wish to. Asus did very well in designing a very nice and attractive looking laptop on the outside with an extensive set of features and quite powerful hardware inside. Along with the laptop you also get a nice bagpack to easily carry it everywhere with you along with all the additional accessories and these include not only the bundled 3D Vision glasses, but also a gaming mouse in the form of Razer Abyssus, so you can actually be ready for gaming on the go and in S3D too…

The general idea behind the new NVIDIA Optimus technology for notebook is that it chooses the best graphics processor for running a given application and automatically routes the workload to either an NVIDIA discrete GPU or Intel integrated graphics – delivering great performance while also providing great battery life. This happens just as a Hybrid car chooses between the gas-powered and electric car engine on-the-fly and uses the most appropriate engine, NVIDIA Optimus technology does the same thing for graphics processors. NVIDIA Optimus Technology instantly directs the workload through the most efficient processor for the job, extending battery life by up to 2 times compared to similarly configured systems equipped with discrete graphics processors (GPUs). When playing 3D games, running videos, or using GPU compute applications the high-performance NVIDIA discrete GPU is used. When using basic applications, like web surfing or email, the integrated graphics processor is used and all this leads to longer lasting battery life without sacrificing great graphics performance.

Now, what we should see are companies like Alienware, for example and others that do have big and powerful gaming laptops to go and integrate Optimus, so that the battery life on these graphic powerhouses won’t be too low. I mean less than an hour on a battery while you are using the laptop for browsing and the powerful video card or even two video cards are actually not being loaded and even needed. Why should we cope up with that when with the help of Optimus the power hungry GPUs can be completely switched off electrically while they are not needed and get lets say two-three-four times longer battery life from the same laptop. Of course when you run a game it should back again switch on the powerful GPU and you’ll be able to take advantage of the top performance although the battery life will be reduced. But then again why should we sacrifice battery life when we don’t need the powerful discrete GPU and that is the most serious issue the Optimus technology is addressing and is doing this with a simple, but very effective approach that simply works for just about everyone. You don’t have to be a power user or aware of the fact you need to switch something by hand every time, it all happens automatically, but only when you need it…

Nvidia EcoBook is a DIY Project, based on the Pegatron Cape 7 mini PC using Intel Atom CPU and Nvidia ION chipset with the goal to turn one of these multimedia systems into a book and put it along other books on the shelf. The result is a good-looking and “invisible” multimedia computer system for the living room that you can connect directly to your big HDTV and browse the net, watch HD videos both online and offline and even play games that are not too demanding. In the video you can see a comparison with a commercially available PC – the AOpen MiniPC, but that one uses integrated Intel graphics and a normal mobile Intel CPU instead of a low power and energy efficient Intel Atom processor. Note that the EcoBook PC seems to be using dual-core CPU, but actually that is because of the HyperThreading support resulting in two logical cores seen by the OS and the processor being physically a single core. The recommended Os to install and use with this PC is Windows 7, because of the available GPU acceleration built-in directly in the OS that can take advantage of the GPU performance that the integrated GPU in the Nvidia ION chipset has to offer. The 750GB WesternDigital Blue hard drive is not the typical height of 9.5 millimeters for a mobile HDD, but instead is 12.5 mm, but that is not an issue with this book design as there is enough space and having 750 gigabytes of space in such small size PC is great. The Pegatron Cape 7 has 1GB of integrated RAM, but it is good to add 1 GB more for achieving optimum performance not only for the system, but for the GPU too as the GeForce 9400M-like integrated graphics uses shared system memory for its needs.

Buying a product with an unknown Chinese brand can sometimes bring you an unwanted surprise and not to mention some additional headaches or even serious problems. A fresh example I had was with such product was an ExpressCard reader for Compact Flash cards that I picked up because of the very attractive price it had. Of course the product worked without any problems, or at least most of the time, there were just a few times that my laptop froze when inserting the reader. So I decided to open it up and see if there is any problem with it that might be causing the freezes and imagine my surprise when I’ve found the piece of solder on the picture above freely moving inside the case of the reader. I was quite happy that it did not do any serious damage to my laptop besides the few times it froze up the PC without any permanent damage. But if I was not lucky enough it could’ve shorted something important and could result in my laptop being seriously damaged, so next time when buying some item like that I’ll have this in mind…

In brief the Acer GD245HQ is better designed, better built and performing better than the first generation 120Hz displays from ViewSonic and Samsung. It has an updated list of parameters, offers less ghosting, and although it brings some other new possible issues, in general it is more of a good improvement. If you wanted this to be the perfect and absolutely problem free monitor for stereoscopic 3D gaming, like a lot of people did, you might be a bit disappointed, but that is because we all probably had set too high expectations for it.

ATI/AMD sometimes is making some good moves, but they often seem to be done in half, for example the latest one – producing a limited edition of 6500 plastic figures of Agent Ruby Revenge. Good idea to make the fans happy, or at least at first sight, but then again when you take a closer look at the Rubi figure you can easily see that the result from this move might be just the opposite. Who in his right mind has designed the plastic figure, it has nothing to do even with Ruby’s picture on the box, the face of the figure is awfully designed and the colors of hair etc do not match a lot. You can even say that the Ruby figure looks more like a transvestite than a hot and sexy girl as it should’ve been, but that seems not to bother ATI a lot… the marketing guys are probably thinking that the figure is a big hit.

How can you not be disappointed with your brand new Razer Lycosa gaming keyboard that you’ve bought just a few days ago (3 to be exact) for all around daily usage, including gaming of course and it starts to look like that in no time. The buttons that have non-slip rubber finish are easily scratched from nothing more than just typing on them…

And the plastic part of the keyboard that has mirror finish follows exactly the same pattern, very easily scratchable by just using the keys as you can see with the arrow keys. Now everything should’ve been normal and expected if that was some cheap no-name Chinese brand keyboard, but we are talking about Razer here – one of the top gaming hardware producers. And that exactly is the biggest disappointment… I kind of expected a more durable and good look retaining product from such an expensive device, aside from the good gaming performance and features that the keyboard packs.

Shame on James Cameron for not releasing a stereoscopic 3D version of the trailer for Avatar, but just trying to convince us to go watch the movie in 3D by just showing us some “flat” teasers and trailers with scenes from the movie. Luckily now there is at least a stereoscopic 3D version convert from the official trailer of the movie that looks nice, but don’t expect anything to hit you in the face with this one. Converting 2D to Stereoscopic 3D video does not provide the same great results as when shooting the video in S3D and then providing it in that format, but still it is better than plain 2D, so you might as well enjoy the trailer.

The Avatar S3D trailer is encoded in Windows Media Video format in Interlaced format (Field Sequential) so you’ll need to tell the Nvidia 3D Vision Stereoscopic Player to use Interlaced, Left Line First mode when opening the file with aspect ratio of 16:9. You should of course be able to play the video with other respective video players and 3D setups that do support this format, although this 2D to S3D convert was made especially for 3D Vision owners.
